Does it make sense to create recruitment leaflets?

A recruitment flyer is no substitute for your application documents! It is best used as a supplement or in situations where a full application is not usually to hand. It is therefore very useful at trade fairs, as it provides the recipient with all the information they need in a concise format to form a general impression of you.

Is it a good idea to include a quote in your application?

If it fits with the company culture and/or your outlook on life and work, then yes. This allows you to emphasise that you have given careful thought to the role you’re applying for.
In any case, you should name the author or point out if they are unknown. Anything else will come across as if you’re trying to take credit for someone else’s work.

Who would benefit most from a brief profile?

A short profile is primarily intended for specialists and managers who are either seeking to put themselves forward for a senior role or wish to broaden their professional horizons. The skills and profile page is not particularly suitable for those just starting out in their careers. They have generally not yet gained enough experience to fill this page with meaningful and compelling content.

Is a creative application always the better choice?

In the creative sector, original applications are almost a must. If, on the other hand, you are applying for roles in the finance and banking sectors or for academic positions, you should steer clear of them. Even if you feel that this type of application does not suit your personality, you would be better off not doing it.

What should the subject line of my application include?

As well as the word ‘Application’, the one-liner should include the exact job title from the advert and any reference number. The word ‘Subject’ at the start seems outdated. Details of where you saw the job advert should go in the so-called ‘reference line’. This is slightly smaller than the subject line and is located directly below it.

Is the application photo still part of the application documents?

In Austria, most HR managers regard a photograph as standard and expect one to be included. In other European countries, it is desirable. Exceptions include Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Netherlands, where photographs are not customary. Applications to the UK and Ireland should not include a photograph. The same applies to Australia and the USA.

What do you think of CV templates?

CV templates save you work, as you don’t have to worry about formatting or layout. Usually, all you need to do is replace the placeholder text with your own details.

As a result, these templates are very often used by many other applicants too. You should therefore always adapt them to suit your own situation and ensure that you use the same font for both your cover letter and CV. This will give your documents a consistent look and feel.

What information is useful when writing a speculative application?

First of all, you should find out what basic requirements applicants are generally expected to meet at your chosen company. Current job vacancies advertised by the company, as well as the company website in general, provide an indication of what the company expects from its employees.

In addition, you should also consider: Is the company currently dealing with any specific issues? Are there any particular challenges on the horizon? Think about what you, as an applicant, can offer to help overcome these challenges.

How should I address several people in a cover letter?

If you are writing to several people, you could, in theory, write their names directly next to one another, for example:

Dear Mr Huber, Dear Mr Moser,

If you are addressing more than two people, or if the names are particularly long, it is better to list them one below the other. This format is much clearer, especially if one person has a double-barrelled surname.

Should I request a read and delivery confirmation when sending my email application?

Whilst such a confirmation does give you peace of mind and some initial feedback, it is very likely to annoy the recipient. I would therefore recommend that you avoid doing this. You can send the application to yourself in a blind copy and – if you do not receive a confirmation of receipt – follow up by telephone a week later to ask whether the email has been received.
