Although the CV is likely to be the first thing recruiters look at, the cover letter is the heart of your application. It is here that recruiters learn about your motivation and your ability to present a case. You can really score points here, particularly if the future role involves writing. It also becomes clear whether you have familiarised yourself with the job description and the company, and tailored your comments accordingly.
I would strongly advise against doing this. It could give the impression that you are not willing to make the effort to tailor your applications to each role. It is also possible that different recruiters are responsible for the position in question – in which case it becomes difficult if they have to share an application.
In every role, you learn or apply skills. It is always important that you can establish a link to the advertised position. You should therefore consider, for each piece of work experience, how it can help you perform well in the job you are applying for. Once you have identified any such links, it is worth mentioning them.
This approach is appropriate for qualifications that were not completed as part of the curriculum. You can also list additional modules or language courses in this way to demonstrate your commitment. However, as degree programmes are usually known to HR departments, I would advise against duplicating information.
The current date should be aligned to the right in the cover letter, either below or next to the recipient’s name. Ideally, you should use the date of dispatch. In terms of format, ‘29 July 2021’ looks more appealing than ‘29.07.2021’.
Your CV should be tailored and structured individually for each application. This means that the order of sections is likely to vary from case to case. For example, if your vocational training and degree are highly relevant to the role, you should list your educational background immediately after your personal details. It is crucial that you highlight your strongest points as early as possible in your CV. Recruiters want to be able to spot these at a glance within a few minutes.
Read the job advertisement carefully: What are the duties? What exactly are the requirements? What qualifications are relevant? Tailor your application documents accordingly by mentioning the key qualifications in your CV and cover letter, or highlighting them prominently. In addition, think about why you specifically want to work for this company and set this out clearly in your cover letter.
It is not necessary to state in your CV whether or not you have children. However, if you are applying for a job where you will be working with children, mentioning your children in your CV may be an advantage.
In addition to any questions the university may have specified, you should address the following points concisely:
– Why are you applying for your chosen degree programme?
– Why have you chosen this particular university?
– How will your chosen degree programme contribute to your future career?
– Do you meet all the entry requirements for the degree programme? What qualifications do you have that stand out?
Ideally, a personal statement for a degree programme should be one and a half pages long.
In this free-text field – much like in your cover letter – you should use your strengths and qualifications to demonstrate why you are suitable for this job. You’ll often only have a limited number of characters available here. It’s therefore important to write a short and concise paragraph that includes the key terms from the job advertisement. By taking the necessary care, you can set yourself apart from the competition.
