Should excellent academic results be included on my CV?

An excellent degree reflects your approach to your work and is therefore important when applying for jobs after graduation. However, as you gain professional experience, its significance diminishes.

Can I also attach the supporting documents in a zipped file when applying?

I would advise against this, as it involves several steps to open the files. This is very cumbersome and may result in important documents being overlooked. It is better to limit the number of attachments and include them as a single PDF document.

The company would like to receive the application documents by post. Can I still send them by email?

Even in this age of online applications, there are still companies that prefer applications to be sent by post. You should accept this. Otherwise, the recruiter might get the impression that you haven’t read the job advert or have ignored it.

Should I use a portrait for the photo, or is it OK for the upper body to be visible as well?

Both are possible. Whilst a portrait photo focuses on your eyes and your smile, a half-length photo shows more of your clothing and your posture. However, you should make sure that your face is still clearly recognisable.

I’d like to know whether and when I can follow up with the company after sending my unsolicited application.

Of course, you can follow up. However, you should wait between two and four weeks before getting in touch. To begin with, you should simply enquire whether your application documents have been received. Only then should you cautiously ask about the current vacancy situation.

Should a speculative application include any supporting documents?

As the main aim of this application strategy is to spark the HR professionals’ initial interest in getting to know the applicant personally, attachments are not usually expected or sent. Nevertheless, there is no reason why you should not include individual pieces of evidence – particularly relevant, meaningful or positive ones – with a speculative application on a voluntary basis.

Should I include my marital status on my CV?

Although it was quite common for a long time, details of your marital status are no longer required. Your qualifications and professional experience are far more important.

What is the best way to name the file attached to my email application?

The file name should be descriptive and user-friendly. The following information is important to the company: your name and the title of the role you are applying for. Even though the company name is likely to appear in the filename for the company’s application management system, the format ‘Application_Your Name_Role.pdf’ has proven effective for sending the file. This ensures that the document can be saved and organised with minimal effort.

Which text formatting features are recommended for use in application documents?

When text is underlined, certain letters are obscured. Furthermore, we very often associate underlined text with links. Italics give the impression of a quotation – in other words, something that isn’t your own work. In addition, this type of text often appears blurred to the eye. When using colour, you should use no more than one colour and incorporate it into all parts of your application. In my opinion, the targeted use of bold type – for example, for key terms – makes the most sense.

What line spacing should I use for my application documents?

A line spacing of 1.15 is ideal for a cover letter. If the body text is shorter, increase the line spacing gradually until the page looks reasonably full, but do not exceed 1.5. To break up the text, you can also insert a blank line between paragraphs. This gives the text more structure and makes it easier to read than simply increasing the line spacing.
