Provigil is the brand name for modafinil, a wakefulness-promoting medicine used in adults with excessive daytime sleepiness linked to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, or shift work disorder. It does not replace proper sleep and is not a standard treatment for ordinary fatigue.
It is usually taken once daily. For narcolepsy or sleep apnea, it is commonly used in the morning. For shift work disorder, it is usually taken about 1 hour before the work shift. Food may delay onset slightly, but it can be taken with or without food.
Common side effects include headache, nausea, nervousness, anxiety, insomnia, dizziness, diarrhea, back pain, and stuffy or runny nose. It can also reduce appetite in some people.
Important warnings include serious rash or allergic reactions, new or worsening psychiatric symptoms such as agitation, mania, hallucinations, depression, or suicidal thoughts, and cardiovascular symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, or shortness of breath. It should be used cautiously in people with heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, liver problems, or a history of mental health disorders.
Provigil may interact with hormonal birth control and make it less effective. It can also interact with other medicines that affect the brain, liver enzyme pathways, or blood pressure. Alcohol may worsen side effects.
This drug can impair judgment in some people despite improving wakefulness, so driving or operating machinery should be avoided until the response is clear. It also has misuse potential and should not be used casually as a “smart drug.”
