Neurontin is the brand name for gabapentin, a nervous system medicine used to treat partial seizures and certain types of nerve pain, especially postherpetic neuralgia. It is not a standard painkiller and does not work well for every type of chronic pain.

It is usually taken 2 to 3 times daily depending on the condition and kidney function. It can be taken with or without food. Doses are often started low and increased gradually. It should not be stopped suddenly, especially in people taking it for seizures, because withdrawal or worsening symptoms can occur.

Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, coordination problems, blurred vision, tremor, dry mouth, nausea, constipation, and swelling in the legs or hands. Some people also feel mentally slowed or foggy.

Important warnings include serious sleepiness, breathing problems when combined with opioids or other sedatives, mood changes, depression, suicidal thoughts, severe allergic reactions, and swelling. Children may show behavioral changes such as irritability, hyperactivity, or concentration problems.

Kidney function matters because gabapentin is cleared through the kidneys. Dose adjustment is often needed in renal impairment. Alcohol and sedating medicines can make side effects worse.

Neurontin may help sleep indirectly in some people because it causes drowsiness or reduces nerve pain, but it is not mainly a sleep medicine. Driving or using machinery should be avoided until the personal response is clear.
